CBS News – New York Gov. David Paterson commuted the sentence Thursday of a black man imprisoned for the racially charged shooting death of a white teenager on Long Island, a decision in the final days of his administration that infuriated the lawyer who prosecuted the case.

Paterson said the five months John Harris White has served was enough time for the emotion-fueled 2006 shooting death of Daniel Cicciaro, 17. Paterson said everybody connected with the case had suffered enough, and White was released Thursday. Continue Reading…

John Harris White and Governor David Patterson

John Harris White has been released from prison after serving 6 months for manslaughter & possession of an illegal weapon convictions. New York Governor David Patterson ‘commuted’ his sentence today.

John Harris White was set to be in prison for 2-4 years for shooting 17-year old Daniel Cicciaro in an attempt to protect his son, Aaron White.

Aaron had just left a party after being asked to leave for ‘posting online threats’ about a girl in attendance (found to be not true).

A ‘lynch mob’ or a large group of racist kids then showed up at the White’s house in the predominantly white Long Island neighborhood.

Daniel Cicciaro was driving with an alcohol level above the legal limit and was 3 inches away from the gun when he was shot.

His father, Daniel Sr. screamed “Let’s see what happens when Aaron White gets shot.” And that was when he thought John Harris White would serve 4 years in prison.

It was a tough decision and both sides have much to be sad and angry about.

Congress has passed a bill to settle discrimination and mistreatment cases filed against them on behalf of Native Americans and Black Farmers.

The Black Farmers were given $1.2 billion dollars from a lawsuit that was settled 11 years ago in 1999.

Native Americans were given $3.4 billion dollars for Indian water-rights violations and royalties owed to them.

Iowa Republican Steve King expressed resentment towards the legislation. He compared the settlements to ‘slavery reparations’.

Steve King’s exact words were “We are not gonna pay slavery reparations in the United States Congress…That war’s been fought. That was over a century ago. That debt was paid for in blood and it was paid for in the blood of a lot of Yankees, especially. And there’s no reparations for the blood that paid for the sin of slavery.”

NY Times – An Oklahoma constitutional amendment aimed at stopping the use of Islamic law in its courts was dealt a serious blow on Monday when a federal judge temporarily blocked the state from putting it into effect.

Judge Vicki Miles-LaGrange of the Federal District Court in Oklahoma City granted a preliminary injunction against a constitutional amendment that stops the use of Islamic Law in Oklahoma courts.

The amendment passed when 70% of Oklahoma voters voted in favor of State Question 755 during the midterm elections held on Nov. 2, 2010.

Scott Broughton, an assistant attorney general for the state, has said the amendment is not intended to infringe on anyone’s religion.

He claims the amendment is meant to prohibit Judges from using legal principles of other nations and cultures.

The Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act will give prosecutors the authority to aggressive  prosecute a hate crime occurring in Farmington, New Mexico.

The Swastika Shaved onto his head

Three young McDonald’s employees in Farmington branded a swastika on the arm of a mentally disabled Native American man.

The kids also shaved a swastika symbol on the back of a 22-year old Navajo man’s head and used markers to draw other hateful symbols on the man’s body.

The 3 kids are white and will be the first in the nation charged under the new Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act enacted in 2009. The act makes it easier to prosecute hate crimes and increases punishment for hate crimes.

The racist kids are facing up to 10 years in prison and could be sentenced to life if kidnapping charges are proved.

This hateful incident will greatly hamper peaceful talks between the Navajo Nation and Farmington leaders who just signed a race-relations agreement this month.
